It was a proud moment for the Indian Special Olympics girls soccer team when they won the bronze medal at the recently concluded Special Olympics Unified Cup 2022 in Detroit.  Over 20 countries were represented with 300 participants.  The objective of the competition was to show the world how the power of sport builds and shapes a diverse community that unites and empowers people of all abilities, from all backgrounds.  The week-long event  demonstrated athletic performances on the field and highlighted stereotype-defying stories off the field—changing minds and opening hearts through transformational inclusion.

The Indian contingent had a great experience in Detroit by winning a medal and more importantly the hearts and support of the Michigan Indian community members. Several of our community members provided food and other help to make the participants feel at home.

The Special Olympics Unified Cup was scheduled between 31 July – 6 August 2022 and Special Olympics Unified Sports® is what makes it uniquely inclusive: Teams are comprised of footballers with and without intellectual disabilities playing together. Over 300 footballers from over 20 nations competed in Soccer. Our team from Bharat (India) typically play in 22 Summer and Winter games during the year across the world. Team Bharat comprised of teens with women players between 15 and 18 years.

Team Bharat after competing with some hot favorites of the season, took home the bronze medal.
