Twelve years ago, Mai Family Services started the tradition of STOP Domestic Violence Awareness Walk. The first walk was held on October 3, 2009, in Rochester at 9:00 AM on a cold, rainy day with more than 125 participants with their raincoats, umbrellas, and pets.
On October 3, under similar weather conditions, more than 25 MaiFS team members (Board members, staff, caseworkers, volunteers, and family members) kept that tradition going by participating in the Southfield City Walk, organized by the City of Southfield to bring awareness of Domestic Violence to the community.
Even though it was a rainy, cloudy day, as Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence put it 'liquid sunshine, there was a lot of excitement, commitment, and passion for the cause with every single attendee working toward addressing the cause of Domestic Violence.
Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren led the kick-off, followed by Congresswoman Ms. Lawrence, Mayor of Southfield, District Court Judges, Oakland County Commissioner Janet Jackson, and other Southfield City Officials with compelling speeches to STOP Domestic Violence.
Mai Family Services is committed to serving Domestic Violence survivors. Since its inception in 1986, the organization has served over 1500 individuals in Michigan. Please visit Mai Family Services at www.MAIFS.org or call their helpline at (248) 477-4985.
