India Independence Day 2017

Independence Day 2017

 · 2 min read

August 15, 2017 marks 70 years of India being a free nation. While many of us were not around on August 15th 1947, we have heard so much about that historic day from our parents and grandparents.

The saying goes that “you can take a person out of India but you can never take the Indian out a person from India”.   Whether it is food, dance, religion, arts, movies, fashions, philosophy or family ties we all continue to live as Indians.  While we appreciate and love America our emotional bonds with India can never be untied.

Miindia.com was launched 18 years ago to bring our community together.  Based on feed-back and independent site statistics, miindia.com is the only Indian website in America that has done it so successfully.  We thank each one of you for your support.  During the last 18 years, a lot has changed in the community.  The population of Indians and Indian Americans in Michigan has more than doubled to over a 100,000.  There are more community organizations and events.  New restaurants and businesses continue to open their doors. We should all be proud of the fact that our community is the most vibrant ethnic community in Michigan.

Children born here to Indian parents have reached great heights.  Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN and Dr. Raj Shah (former head of USAID) grew up here.  Recently, Ankan Bhattacharya of Canton won a Gold medal at the Math Olympiad.  Our community members are also credited with launching numerous successful businesses in Michigan.  A few are into mainstream politics. There are hundreds of unsung heroes (men, women and children) who by volunteering their time have made this a better place to live and thrive.

Let us celebrate India’s 70th Independence day.  Let us take a moment to express our gratitude to the generation that sacrificed itself for India’s freedom.  Let us never forget the opportunities America continues to provide for us. Jai Hind and God Bless America.
