August 21, 2021Millions of Malayalees worldwide are celebrating Onam today. Celebrations include family get-togethers with beautiful floral arrangements called “Pookkalam” and delicious feat Onam “Sadya”.
Local Malayalee organizations typically host Onam celebrations. COVID-19 limits on large gatherings have affected celebrations everywhere including here in Michigan. COVID-19 has also led to the cancellation of grand celebrations with boat races, elaborate processions with decorated elephants that take place in Kerala. Let us hope that things will be back to normal next year.
