August 31, 2020Millions of Malayalees in and out of Kerala are celebrating the harvest festival of Onam today. Typically, grand celebrations with boat races, elaborate processions with decorated elephants take place in Kerala. Due to COVID-19 the celebrations are rather subdued with many cancelled events.
Typically, local Kerala organizations in Michigan host grand cultural events every year. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has led to cancellations this year. However, many families are celebrating with floral arrangements (flower carpets) called Pookkalam, delicious feast Onam Sadya, music and dance and family get-togethers.
